What Is Xarelto?

Xarelto is an oral blood thinner manufactured by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson that is used to treat blood clots and pulmonary embolism. Xarelto was first approved by the FDA in July 2011 to reduce the risk of blood clotting in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery. It was later approved for use as a treatment to reduce the risk of blood clotting and strokes in patients with irregular heart rhythms, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Due to aggressive marketing campaigns by its manufacturers, Xarelto now has the largest share of the market of any warfarin-alternative blood thinner. However, with so many patients now taking the drug, there are an increasing number of reports of harmful side effects, such as excessive and irreversible bleeding, with many of these instances becoming fatal. Xarelto does not have an antidote for when these harmful side effects occur. This puts patients using the drug at serious risk of a bleeding incident to which there is no remedy.
