A $4.75 million settlement has been reached in a medical malpractice lawsuit in which a Chicago woman and her son claimed that a physician failed to diagnose the woman’s kidney disease, according to the plaintiff’s attorney.
The suit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, alleged that the University of Chicago physician didn’t recognize or respond to obvious signs of kidney disease during the woman’s pregnancy in 1998 and 1999.
The woman experienced end-stage renal disease and required dialysis until she received a kidney transplant in 2003. Her son was extremely small at birth and needed hormone treatments to grow.
It was settled on Wednesday in a private mediation handled by attorneys Geoffrey L. Gifford of Pavalon, Gifford, Laatsch & Marino and Richard H. Donohue of Donhue, Brown, Mathewson & Smith LLC.
The family was represented by Christopher T. Hurley and Michael T. Mertz of [[title]], PC.
The defendants were represented by Kay L. Schichtel at Swanson Martin & Bell LLP. She was not available for comment on Tuesday.
