nursing home care, Chicago nursing home negligence lawyersA law signed by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn went into effect at the first of the New Year to help protect the safety, care, and rights of senior citizens in the state. The law is designed to improve reporting procedures, investigations, and swifter resolutions for negligence and abuse of elders in nursing homes.

A National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) research brief reveals that over 50 percent of nursing home staff admitted to mistreating elder patients. Physical abuse was the highest reported type of abuse occurring in nursing homes and two-thirds of the incidents of mistreatment involved neglect. With research showing over 40 percent of people over the age of 65 will enter a nursing home before they die, these disturbing statistics are cause for high alert and concern among families.

Nursing home residents suffering neglect have been victim to:

  • Malnourishment;
  • Dehydration;
  • Pressure sores; and
  • Infections.

In one of the more extreme reported cases, the Detroit News investigated federal records and reported that 14,000 patients died of malnutrition and dehydration nationwide over a four year period. Unfortunately, this does not cover the large number of cases that go unreported and neglect continues to plague nursing homes across the country.

The NCEA estimates that at least 1.5 million seniors are abused every year, but for every one case that is reported, five more go unreported for fear of repercussions. Lack of adequate staffing, decreased funding, and negligence in the hiring process of new staff all contribute to this ongoing problem.

Families count on these long-term facilities to take care of their loved ones. Nursing home staff should be held accountable when there is abuse or neglect of any form. Our attorneys conduct thorough investigations and have high proven track records of success in helping our clients achieve justice and recover compensation that their families may be entitled to as a result of filing a claim.
