Nursing Home Abuse

Nursing home abuse occurs when residents of long-term care facilities--including licensed nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and assisted-living facilities--experience harm or neglect at the hands of caregivers, staff, or even other residents. It can take many forms, including physical abuse, emotional or psychological mistreatment, sexual abuse, financial exploitation, or neglect of basic needs like food, hygiene, and medical care.

Often, victims are vulnerable due to age, disability, or illness, making it difficult for them to advocate for themselves. Sadly, warning signs such as unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, or poor living conditions can go unnoticed unless family members and loved ones remain vigilant.

Types of Nursing Home Abuse

Nursing home abuse can be physical, involving hitting, pushing, or the improper use of restraints. Emotional or psychological abuse includes yelling, threats, humiliation, or isolating a resident from others. Sexual abuse occurs when a resident experiences unwanted or non-consensual sexual contact, often going unreported due to fear or vulnerability.

Neglect can result in severe injuries, including pressure sores and contractures.  Improper supervision and lack of fall precautions can result in severe injuries, including hip, leg and skull fractures.

Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect

Nursing home abuse happens when residents are harmed by staff, caregivers, or even other residents through neglect, mistreatment, or exploitation. It can involve physical harm, emotional abuse, failure to provide basic care, or financial exploitation. These actions often cause serious injuries, worsening health, or lasting emotional trauma. Families trust nursing homes to provide safe, compassionate care—when that trust is broken, the results can be devastating. Protecting vulnerable seniors means recognizing the signs of abuse and holding facilities accountable.
