Boy Scout Sexual Abuse

Hurley, McKenna & Mertz, P.C. represents victims of sexual predators who exploited Boy Scouts for many decades due to a lax and ineffective system of screening and reporting.  A number of former scout executives as well as volunteers are currently serving jail time for their heinous and despicable acts of sexual violation, the results of criminal cases brought by prosecutors throughout the US.  The Boy Scouts of America is also the subject of civil suits for damages due to its negligence in dealing with abusive adults in the Boy Scout program.

The firm is actively involved in litigation against the BSA concerning two of Illinois' most notorious Scouting pedophiles - former scouting executive Charles Bickerstaff and former scoutmaster Thomas Hacker.  Our most recent filing, on behalf of a plaintiff who wishes to remain anonymous, was announced via a news release which received significant media attention due to Hacker's pathetic record as "the most prolific molester in Scouting: He moved among troops and schools for 25 years, molesting, by his estimate, 'well over 100' boys."  (Patrick Boyle, Scout's Honor: Sexual Abuse in America's Most Trusted Institution)

FDA Panel on Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants

The FDA recently called on a panel of health experts to address mounting concerns regarding the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants.  This panel determined that there are few, if any, reasons to continue using metal-on-metal implants due to the serious risks they pose to patients.  Patients who received metal-on-metal hip implants have experienced a wide range of adverse effects including bone and soft issue breakdown, infections, fractures, swelling, severe pain and limited mobility.

At Hurley, McKenna & Mertz, we are proud to represent our client, Mark Stephan, a person who has inspired both our firm and the world with his indomitable spirit and sheer determination to rise above a tragic injury.

In August 2007 Mark was riding his bicycle when the front wheel detached and he plunged head-first into the pavement, breaking his neck and becoming a minimally functional quadriplegic. Although his doctors told him that he would never walk again, Mark refused to accept that fate. His focus and determination are amazing as he continues to work tirelessly on intensive rehabilitation. He simply refuses to give up and we think he embodies the American spirit.

Update 2012:

Mark Stephan

All of us at Hurley, McKenna & Mertz continue to be amazed by our client, Mark Stephan, as he breaks through more and more barriers that others thought would never be broken due to his injuries. Mark is presently riding from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, CA on a custom-made recumbent tricycle to raise money for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Mike, Chris, Mark Stephan

On June 12, 2012, Christopher T. Hurley and Michael T. Mertz had the opportunity to spend the day riding with Mark in Bayou Country Louisiana and witnessed firsthand the amazing determination and tireless spirit of this inspirational man.

In December 2009 Mark stunned friends and family by climbing all 2,109 stairs of the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in Chicago. NBC Today with Mike Leonard documented the inspiring story in the following video.

“If you think you are done…you are.”
