Although there are regulations and protections in place to protect Americans from dangerous products, many still slip through the cracks. One such example is the laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can increase the risk of cancer as much as three times because of its formaldehyde levels. Know your risks and what you should do if you have been exposed to this dangerous product.

What is Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, and strong-smelling chemical frequently used in building products and household items. These items, which include everything from clothing and paper product coatings to glues and pressed woods, can release gasses or vapors into the air, leading to human or animal exposure.

Even in low amounts, those sensitive can experience breathing problems, nausea, burning of the eyes or nose, and skin irritation. But even healthy individuals who suffer from long-term, high-level exposure can experience these symptoms. Both groups may also be at an elevated risk for certain types of cancer. For this reason, there are regulations in place that limit the amount of formaldehyde that may cause exposure to humans or animals.

Lumber Liquidators and Formaldehyde

Lumber Liquidators first came under fire for their level of formaldehyde use during a “60 Minutes” story that alleged their products contained dangerous levels. This was initially deemed a low risk by the CDC, but further examination revealed that incorrect ceiling heights used in the test lowered the concentration by as much as three times. They recently revised their test and stated that the products could cause as many as six to 30 tumors per 100,000 people exposed.
