Takata Airbag Recall Update: Honda Leads Expansion for Nationwide Repairs

Posted on in Product Liability

Chicago airbag recall lawyerHonda has become the first and only automotive company thus far to meet the demand from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to repair vehicles nationwide after the recent recall of Takata airbags.

Previously, the recall for airbags were limited to high-humidity states only. An increase in humidity was found to cause the airbags to inflate too fast, leading to an explosion, which caused shrapnel to spew out.

According to a report, Honda is expanding its repairs to over 2.6 million for a total of 5.4 million vehicles. The following models are included in this expansion:

  • 2001 to 2007 four-cylinder Honda Accords;
  • 2001 and 2002 V6 Accords;
  • 2001 to 2005 Honda Civics;
  • 2002 to 2006 Honda CR-Vs;
  • 2002 to 2004 Honda Odysseys;
  • 2002 and 2003 Acura TLs;
  • 2002 Acura CLs;
  • 2003 to 2011 Honda Elements;
  • 2003 to 2007 Honda Pilots;
  • 2003 to 2006 Acura MDXs; and
  • 2006 Honda Ridgelines.

Despite Honda’s move to address customer concerns and repair the defective product responsible for putting millions of drivers at risk, it is labeling the recall a “safety improvement campaign.” The automotive company maintains that the Takata airbags are not defective.

People still remain at risk as both Takata and Chrysler have refused the demand for nationwide repairs by the NHTSA. At this time, BMW, Mazda, and Ford are undecided whether to initiate repairs nationwide.

There have been hundreds of documented reports of injuries and at least five known deaths as a direct result of these airbags malfunctioning. Yet, car manufacturers are hesitant or non-compliant with requests to have them repaired. Companies must face the consequences of their decisions when their products put people in danger and cause them harm.
